We Know What Works

What to know: Crime is skyrocketing in cities such as Chicago.

The TPPF take: Crime is skyrocketing because consequences are nonexistent.

“The evidence is clear: Crime is deterred by increasing the odds of prosecution,” says TPPF’s Brett Tolman. “Increasing penalties has relatively little effect on crime rates; it’s really all about whether police and prosecutors will do their jobs. That’s a legitimate question in areas where police are defunded and prosecutors are pursuing social justice instead of the rule of law.”

Back to the Polls

What to know: Texas voters will decide a number of constitutional questions on the ballot in November.

The TPPF take: Want to know more about the proposed amendments? We can help!

“In the past, voters have sometimes left the polling place more confused than when they first arrived,” says TPPF’s Greg Sindelar. “Part of the blame is often due to ballot language that is clunky, complicated, and convoluted. With that in mind, and with the spirit of civic responsibility, please enjoy the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s 2023 Guide to Constitutional Amendments in Texas.”

Parent Empowerment

What to know: Texas lawmakers will soon reconvene in Austin for a special session on parent empowerment.

The TPPF take: This is the year for parent empowerment.

“The politics is what has kept parents from having the freedom to select the best school for their children,” says TPPF’s Mandy Drogin. “The unions, education lobbyists and administrators, whose only goal is to rake more money in to the system, worry that parental empowerment will erode their control and require greater accountability.”
