A Dream for Doctors

What to know: Medical students and residents at the University of Houston’s planned Direct Primary Care clinic will get to build real relationships with their patients.

The TPPF take: This is a dream come true for those doctors-in-training.

“This is the kind of medicine they worked for years to be able to practice—real doctor/patient relationships, making decisions without having to consult insurance companies or bureaucrats,” says TPPF’s David Balat.

‘Defund’ Debunked?

What to know: Does even The Atlantic get it now? The former Atlantic Monthly just ran a headline that reads, “’Defund the Police’ is a disaster. Under-policing is a form of oppression too.”

The TPPF take: The “defund” movement has been a disaster, especially for minority communities.

“The Defund the Police movement will inevitably collide with the reality of rising crime in elections through 2022,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Results at the local level will be uneven. Nationally, however, Democrats who don’t unequivocally support law enforcement will face strong electoral headwinds from voters of every race and ethnicity who prize their own safety above rhetoric.”

That’s a Win

What to know: U.S. Sen. Mike Braun’s budget amendment that will allow states to use American Rescue Plan Act funds to decrease the tax burden on American families passed in the U.S. Senate last night.

The TPPF take: A coalition of groups, including TPPF, Heritage Action and many others, wrote to Congress about Braun’s bill.

“Using federal coercion to artificially elevate state tax burdens at a time when small businesses and

hardworking American taxpayers need real tax relief is nonsensical,” the letter reads. “Our groups have spent decades working with state policymakers and watching them achieve more economically competitive business climates through pro-growth tax and economic reforms. Having the federal government use ‘the power of the purse’ in an attempt to curtail the use of competitive federalism is incredibly damaging to our American system of government.”
