A Freedom Fighter

What to know: Philanthropist Red McCombs, who passed away last week at the age of 95, established a top-ranked business school at the University of Texas at Austin.

The TPPF take: Red McCombs has left his mark on Texas.

“He had a truly inspiring life story that embodied all the greatness of what it means to be Texan,” says TPPF’s Greg Sindelar. “We remember him as a fighter for liberty and free market principles, contributing significantly to critical public policy issues and conservative causes—without which Texas would be a very different place. In 2021, he was the recipient of TPPF’s highest award, the Sam Houston Award, because he exuded the principles of individual freedom, hard work, and personal responsibility.”

Deterrence

What to know: The war in Ukraine, as well as deteriorating China/U.S. relations—were the topic of conversations at last week’s G20 meeting.

The TPPF take: Helping Ukraine must not come at the expense of deterring China—by being ready.

“With the strain of supplying Ukraine with weapons and China’s mounting belligerence, it would be prudent to conduct a defense industrial base mobilization exercise and include Congress,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “America must seriously prepare to face gathering dangers not seen in 80 years.”

Experimental Treatment

What to know: The Biden administration’s Department of Health and Human Services is pushing transgender “treatment,” even as it funds studies to determine if these experimental treatments are safe or effective.

The TPPF take: These experimental treatments, such as puberty blockers, can do untold damage to developing children, pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Quentin Van Meter warns.

“Puberty isn’t the problem,” Dr. Van Meter says. “Gender dysphoria is the problem. Puberty is the solution.”
