A Mussolini Model?

What to know: A new report from the group Parents Defending Freedom outlines just how insidious the China-operated “Confucius Institutes” in some public schools and college campuses are.

The TPPF take: The Confucius Institutes bring the Chinese government into the American academy in powerful ways.

“What is the purpose of Confucius Institutes?” asks TPPF’s Tom Lindsay, “Well, to quote a member of the Chinese Community Party, the Institutes are “an important part of China’s overseas propaganda set-up.”

Student Loans

What to know: President Joe Biden isn’t backing down on his plan to “forgive” millions of student loans.

The TPPF take: The administration just suffered a massive loss in the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, which ruled that its crown-jewel student loan forgiveness plan was illegal.

“The student loan payment pause is supposed to end in August. Part of the recently passed reconciliation bill requires an end to the pause. But the Biden administration has announced yet another pause, although it pretends it isn’t a pause by calling it an ‘on-ramp,’” says TPPF’s Andrew Gillen. “Restarting payments was one of the concessions that the Biden administration made to Republicans in the reconciliation bill, and now Biden has reneged on the deal.”

Saving the Children

What to know: A heartbroken mother says her 2-year-old son died in CPS custody for just a few weeks. An anonymous tip accused her of drug abuse, but she passed several drug tests. Her children were taken anyway.

The TPPF take: The child welfare system in Texas is broken—but lawmakers are taking real steps to fix it.

“The goal of family support services is to promote healthy outcomes for families and to prevent entries into the foster care system as a result of issues related to substance use, mental health, and conditions of poverty,” says TPPF’s Andrew Brown. “The result of these bills: families will be more easily able to obtain the services they need to achieve stability and children will spend less time in foster care.”
