Addressing the Border Crisis

What to know: The Texas Senate has passed House Bill 7, a wide-ranging array of immigration and border security reforms.

The TPPF take: This bill will give additional tools to the state of Texas to rein in the crisis at our southern border.

“This border security legislation is needed in order to protect Texans and send a strong message to Mexican drugs cartels: Texas does not tolerate human and drug trafficking,” says TPPF’s Greg Sindelar. “To echo the words of Chairman Birdwell, Texas must not fail where both the federal government and the Mexican government have. For this reason, we look forward to the Texas Legislature sending this strong border security legislation to Gov. Abbott.”

Protecting Our Children’s Innocence

What to know: Texas lawmakers have passed a bill that will keep obscene and pornographic materials out of public school libraries.

The TPPF take: Texas legislators are right to protect childhood innocence.

“My confidence in public schools to be a safe place for kids to learn was shattered last August when I read quotes from a sexually graphic book displayed in the library at Belton Middle School,” says parent Hillary Hickman, writing for The Cannon Online. “Since that day I have discovered over 100 sexually explicit and age-inappropriate books in every secondary school library of Belton ISD. These books contain narratives and graphics that normalize child sexual abuse, sexual assault, incest, drug abuse and suicide.”

Playing God

What to know: In a new investigative piece for City Journal, Chris Rufo warns of the horrors of “gender affirming care” at Texas Children’s Hospital. The doctors are playing God, he says.

The TPPF take: Texas is right to protect children from experimental treatments.

“There remains no clear and conclusive evidence that blocking puberty, administering cross-sex hormones, or, least of all, performing surgical and chemical castration help children overcome gender dysphoria,” says TPPF’s Andrew Brown. “There is, however, emerging research that shows significant and potentially irreparable damage to children that are given these treatments. Further, psychological counseling and other therapies have proven effective at helping children and families deal with these difficult challenges.”
