Caught Red-Handed

What to know: The Department of Justice has arrested another Chinese researcher smuggling biological materials into the U.S.

The TPPF take: Texas has taken measures to protect itself.

“Concern over China’s potentially harmful infiltration of Texas first took practical effect in 2021, with a law, known as the Lone Star Infrastructure Protection Act, which prohibits companies from China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran from investing in projects connecting to Texas’s critical infrastructure,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Texas’s 2025 legislative session was also productive, with at least 13 bills making it to Gov. Abbott’s desk that will strengthen Texas against hostile actions by the Chinese Communist Party.”

Losing It

What to know: The Associated Press was just handed a loss by an appeals court, in the AP’s demand for access to the White House briefing room. “The First Amendment does not control the president’s discretion in choosing with whom to speak or to whom to provide special access,” the court ruled.

The TPPF take: The AP doesn’t deserve special access.

“The Associated Press is not a news outlet that can be trusted to cover its subjects fairly,” says TPPF’s Roy Maynard. “I was a part of the AP for many, many years. And I watched its self-induced decline as it was happening. I take no joy in its downfall, but I’m not surprised, either. And I wonder who will be around to write its obituary.”

Reverberations

What to know: The massive win for school choice in the Texas Legislature last month is still reverberating throughout the country, City Journal reports.

The TPPF take: The win for families in Texas was a long time coming.

“After decades of work from thousands of leaders, voters, and elected officials, Texas is joining the ranks of dozens of other states that have established school choice programs,” said TPPF’s CEO, Greg Sindelar. “We, along with the millions of parents and students of Texas, are incredibly grateful for the leadership of Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Dustin Burrows, Chairman Brandon Creighton, and Chairman Brad Buckley on getting this vital piece of legislation across the finish line.”
