Education Freedom

What to know: The Texas Comptroller’s Office is accepting families’ applications for Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFAs) from today until March 17.

The TPPF take: This pivotal new program offers an unprecedented opportunity for parents and students across the state.

“By placing decision-making power directly in the hands of families, we’re encouraging parental engagement in education and empowering parents to make the best choices for their children’s future,” says TPPF CEO Greg Sindelar. “TEFAs are testament to what can be achieved when policymakers listen to parents and make student achievement the top priority.”

Boom—and Bust

What to know: Texas’ population is booming, but mostly in the cities and suburbs. Yet meanwhile, the rural areas are losing population.

The TPPF take: TPPF is turning its attention to rural Texas, and the challenges that rural Texans face.

“Rural Texas is worth saving,” says TPPF’s Roy Maynard. “U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins was adamant about this during her confirmation hearings before the U.S. Senate. ‘All Americans are important, but the farmer, the worker of the land who feeds all the others is amongst the most notable,’ Rollins notes. ‘Thomas Jefferson wrote that agriculture is our wisest pursuit because it will, in the end, contribute most to real wealth, good morals and happiness. And his wisdom holds true today.’”

Homan in Minnesota

What to know: President Donald Trump has sent Border Czar Tom Homan to Minnesota to help de-escalate tensions over deportations.

The TPPF take: This was a winning move.

“Homan pointed out that he began working on border issues under President Ronald Reagan and has worked for all six presidents since,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester. “He suggested that if protesters didn’t like immigration enforcement laws they should direct their anger at Congress rather than law enforcement officers.”
