False Promises
“Healthcare reform was forefront at the Republican Midterm Convention, and there is the opportunity to dramatically improve healthcare through reconciliation before the election or before the new congressional session. The middlemen will lose fortunes with reform, but they are not doing anything to help actual medical care or lower the costs. It is time to bypass them,” says TPPF Dr. Cliff Porter. “Current federal rules are causing harm and feeding the cartels. This list of reforms can lower costs 50 percent, by restoring patient and physician control with commonsense reform and a safety net for those who need it.”

What to know: A new report from FIRE indicates which colleges excel and fail the most at allowing free speech.
The TPPF take: “Trigger warnings,” “safe spaces,” and “micro-aggressions” became not just eggshells to be tip-toed but landmines to avoid a symbolic death of public persona for anyone of a conservative political persuasion.
“To win the battleground of ideas requires allowing for all ideas to be heard. Universities are supposed to allow a pursuit on that ever-elusive path toward knowledge and wisdom. Free speech is merely the vehicle to chart that route, and clear guardrails must be established,” says TPPF Cameron Abrams. “Fair standards of speech must be made clear in state law, or risk handing over control to those in academia who will continually move the boundaries of what is, and what is not, allowed to be said.”

The TPPF take: The last several years taught Texas an important lesson: protecting the Lone Star State is our responsibility, and we can’t assume Washington will always do its part.
“Protecting the people is one of the government’s most fundamental responsibilities,” says TPPF Selene Rodriguez. “Texas was right to develop the capabilities necessary to protect its territory and its people, and the state should not relinquish those capabilities simply because it now has a willing partner in Washington.”
