Bad Ideas Keep Popping Up
What to know: A socialist mayor has taken the reins in New York City. Zohran Mamdani declared “I will not abandon my principles for fear of being deemed radical.”
The TPPF take: Like the proverbial groundhog, some ideas just keep popping their heads above-ground. Mamdani’s brand of socialism won’t work, either.
“Housing becomes a colonial metaphor — the landlord as colonizer, the tenant as the colonized,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Policing morphs into occupation, with the NYPD cast as imperial — even Israeli — enforcers. Palestine serves as the ultimate symbol of resistance, unmoored from traditional socialism or theocracy. Islam, in this lens, isn’t about faith but rather a badge of subjugation turned into moral cohesion against the West.”

A Bright Birthday
What to know: As America nears its 250th birthday on July 4 this year, more and more people are calling for a renewal of civic virtues.
The TPPF take: A Texas program aims to improve civic literacy in the Lone Star State.
“At a time when we Americans routinely worry about the health of our civic culture, the U.S. Department of Education has made a notable investment,” says TPPF’s Richard Johnson. “Earlier this month, the department approved a $1.9-million grant for ‘The American Civic Tradition at 250,’ a joint initiative of Texas Southern University and West Texas A&M University aimed at improving civic literacy in underserved communities.”

Children for Sale
What to know: The Vatican’s foreign minister says surrogacy reduces children to products for sale.
The TPPF take: Surrogacy harms the dignity of both women and children.
“To protect not only the dignity of Texas women and children, but also the dignity of women and children throughout the globe, Texas should contemplate banning commercial surrogacy and strengthening regulation of altruistic surrogacy in the state,” says TPPF’s Noah Torres. “The infinite dignity of every woman and child, inalienably grounded in their being, ought to be defended not only for the sake of individual flourishing, but for the flourishing of families, communities, and Texas.”
