‘Helps People’

What to know: High school faculty in Rhode Island are soliciting funds to pay off a Mexican drug cartel that illegally smuggled a student into the U.S. The school says a cartel is a group “that helps people.

The TPPF take: Enriching human traffickers, who all too often kill the people in their power, is wrong.

“Our laws surrounding asylum were never meant to encourage migrants to make the dangerous journey through hundreds of miles of desert terrain — driven by cartels that are basically terrorists for hire,” says TPPF’s Mayra Flores. “Our asylum laws were meant to be a last resort for those fleeing legitimate persecution and had no other options — not the blueprint for a human trafficking pipeline.”

Every Child in Texas

What to know: Rural Texans and minority Texans agree—parent empowerment is important, and every child in Texas should receive the education that works best for them.

The TPPF take: Support for public education doesn’t just mean supporting public schools with no alternatives.

“In reality, public education is simply a public political commitment to provide schooling to all children without regard to each family’s ability to pay, and funding such by taxing all—including those not directly consuming the education,” says radio host Robert Pratt, writing for The Cannon Online. “There is nothing in that commitment that requires the use of any particular model of delivery of schooling.”

Keep On Trucking

What to know: The left is coming for your pickup—because it’s too big, too dangerous and too environmentally unfriendly.

The TPPF take: The left claims Americans only drive big trucks because they’re vain.

“The latest push against large pickup trucks takes two basic forms: They’re large and scary and hurt people, and they’re bad for the environment, especially with people not really needing them for anything practical,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “I don’t own a large pickup truck — yet — but if these pearl-clutching busybodies don’t mind their business, I’m sorely tempted to go out and buy one.”
