Independence Day

What to know: America will soon celebrate her 250th birthday.

The TPPF take: It’s time for a renewal of civic literacy.

“Civic literacy is not a conservative or liberal project; it is a prerequisite for democratic self-rule,” says TPPF’s Richard Johnson. “As James Madison warned, a people who mean to govern themselves must arm themselves with knowledge. Stated differently, our students cannot be expected to defend a country they do not even understand.”

The Universal Aspiration

What to know: What, exactly, are we celebrating on America’s 250th birthday? One thing we celebrate is the Founders’ “universal aspiration” to form a “more perfect union.”

The TPPF take: This “universal aspiration” is foundational to our nation’s greatness.

“The Constitution’s curious phrasing of ‘in order to form a more perfect union’ always seemed hopeful to me; America was not established with any illusion of being a perfect union,” says TPPF’s Roy Maynard. “Instead, that ‘more perfect union’ is presented as a goal to work toward for each generation, sometimes referred to as the ‘eternal effort.’”

Saving Girls

What to know: The Texas Supreme Court has allowed a lawsuit to continue; in that suit, Soren Aldaco explains how she was pressured by doctors and other healthcare providers to medically transition, a procedure that included a double mastectomy.

The TPPF take: Soren appears on a new TPPF podcast talking about her life and her struggles.

“Soren’s voice has become a part of the broader legal and cultural conversation about identity, medicine, and the experience of detransitioners,” says TPPF’s Hannah Bruck. “But at its core, the story she tells is a human story, one about adolescence, belonging, and the search for stability and truth.”
