Making Waves

What to know: The Texas Public Policy Foundation is leading the fight to ensure that offshore wind farms comport with existing environmental laws, a new report from the Houston Chronicle shows.

The TPPF take: The Biden administration is making unkeepable promises about offshore wind farms.

“The administration has put all their political capital on offshore wind and is breaking all the rules in order to do it,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “The administration’s violation of the Endangered Species Act should be a complete bar to the whole project.”

Myth Busting

What to know: Writing in The American Mind, Texas Tech Professor Alex Salter destroys the myths used to oppose parental empowerment, such as the claim that choice will destroy rural school districts.

The TPPF take: Parent empowerment helps everyone, including those in rural districts.

“Choice puts rural students on competitive ground with city kids because it results in more options,” says TPPF’s Mandy Drogin. “Florida started choice in 1999 and the number of private schools in Florida’s 30 rural counties has doubled over that time, from 62 to 119, as private school choice has expanded. They’ve grown by a third over the past 10 years.”

Accreditation

What to know: The Chronicle of Higher Education claims there’s a “right-wing war on accreditation.”

The TPPF take: Our nation’s accrediting agencies have overstepped their bounds.

“Just because conservatives are finally fighting back doesn’t mean they started the war,” says TPPF’s Andrew Gillen. “That distinction belongs to those who politicized the academy in the first place, including accreditors.”
