More Tax Cuts

What to know: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has set the agenda for the First Called Special Session of the 89th Texas Legislature and one prominent item on the call is “further property tax cuts,” which would come in addition to the $10 billion approved during the Regular Session.

The TPPF take:  A $10 billion tax cut is good news. A $10 billion-plus tax cut is great news!

“Texas families deserve massive tax relief, and it’s clear that state-level policymakers recognize that fact. The next 30 days could be a real boon for Texas taxpayers,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “Every dollar returned to Texas taxpayers is one more dollar that families can put toward food, clothes, and rent.”

Targeted Attacks

What to know: Attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are skyrocketing.

The TPPF take: Democrats want a return to the worst of 1960s radicalism and violence.

“But what is the endgame?” asks TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Do the perpetrators really think that violence directed against law enforcement will cause a cessation of enforcement of the law? Do the left-wing agitators believe that their rage against the machine will result in electoral victory? History suggests their actions will lead inexorably to a law-and-order landslide in 2028.”

Texas History

What to know: In the fall, about 300,000 Texas public school students will be learning about Texas history in their seventh grade classes.

The TPPF take: Shouldn’t we teach Texas history as if it matters?

“What do I remember about Texas History class? Mostly, it’s Angelina Jolie,” says TPPF intern Georgia Page. “Our typical 45-minute class period on Texas history consisted of flipping through the textbook and filling out a multiple-choice homework assignment. Collaboration was encouraged, and quizzes took many students about 10 minutes of ‘studying’ to pass. Maybe that’s why watching Jolie’s film ‘True Women’ is the only thing I remember from my middle school Texas History course.”
