No More Anarchy
What to know: President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to quell rioting in Los Angeles.
The TPPF take: The president moved fast to prevent a repeat of the 1992 riots.
“Predictably, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass clutch their pearls, whining about ‘cruel’ immigration enforcement while the city spirals into anarchy,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Trump isn’t moved by the criticism. He doesn’t want to see federal law enforcement officers killed or injured by anarchists and would-be revolutionaries for simply doing their jobs.”

Bail Reform
What to know: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has signed a landmark bail reform bill into law.
The TPPF take: Bail reform happened at the very end of the recently concluded legislative session.
“Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick and House Speaker Dustin Burrows are big winners for passing Senate Joint Resolution 87 which will automatically deny bail to repeat offenders who have committed a violent felony,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester. “This important legislation would have automatically become law if it had received 100 votes in the Texas House, but unfortunately, it fell three votes short, so it will be on the ballot in November, where there is virtually no doubt that Texas voters will approve it.”

Coming For Your Tax Cuts
What to know: The Texas Legislature also passed property tax cuts.
The TPPF take: Local taxing entities may be coming for your tax cut.
“Many local governments are expected to announce bond elections (i.e. efforts to go into debt) and tax ratification elections (i.e. large tax increases requiring voter approval) over the next several months,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “If a local governmental entity decides to venture down either of these pathways—or even propose both!—then the public should expect further erosion of any forthcoming tax relief, beyond the damage done by any ordinary rate hike.”
