Overreach

What to know: The Biden administration authorized the use of deadly force in the FBI’s raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago.

The TPPF take: This ridiculous measure shows the Biden administration has weaponized the Justice Department against his political foes.

“The broader effect of politicized prosecutions is clear — Americans are increasingly convinced we live in a nation with a two-tiered justice system,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “This affirms what Americans learned from the prosecution of Trump for the alleged mishandling of classified documents, while Biden (like Hillary Clinton before him) got a pass for the same thing. And the list goes on.”

Homeless

What to know: Homelessness in Iowa’s Polk County is skyrocketing.

The TPPF take: “Housing First” puts people last.

“Instead of relying on low-barrier efforts, shelters need to have the freedom to focus on individually tailored responses to mental health trauma and drug and alcohol addiction,” says TPPF’s John Bonura. “If we continue to follow the principles of Housing First—instead of putting the people first—the root causes of homelessness will never be addressed, and the cycle of chronic homelessness will continue to churn out needless suffering.”

Public Education and Public Spending

What to know: School officials in Texas say the Legislature needs to give them more money.

The TPPF take: Texas spent $92.4 billion on public education in the 2022-23 school year, which is $16,792 for each of the 5.5 million Texas students.

“Texas Schools are running large deficits and superintendents are unwilling to take responsibility for their district’s fiscal mismanagement,” says TPPF’s Jorge Borrego. “Private vendors are certainly profiting handsomely from your tax dollars, while our students and teachers are continually told there’s a not enough money. The truth is, there is enough money to invest in our kids, if we’d stop wasting it on the latest consultant or lobbyist promising a quick fix to our education problems.”
