Political Violence

What to know: Political violence is on the rise in the U.S.

The TPPF take: Enough is enough: The left must distance itself from political violence.

“The political left, through both its mainstream institutions and online commentators, has continued to stoke a climate of hostility toward its political opponents,” says TPPF’s Cameron Abrams. “For years, the media and Democratic politicians have described MAGA supporters as Nazis, treated ordinary conservative convictions as evidence of fascism, and indulged increasingly reckless comparisons between Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler. Repeated long enough, that language provides a moral permission structure. It teaches unstable minds that their political opposition is evil and existentially dangerous.”

State IDs

What to know: Prison inmates are often released from prison without one of the tools absolutely necessary for successful reentry into society: a state-issued ID.

The TPPF take: Making sure released inmates have state IDs is a step toward rehabilitation.

“For someone leaving incarceration and trying to reenter society the right way, that missing document can become the first of several barriers they will encounter on their road to stabilization,” says TPPF’s Dwight Hudson. “People who are motivated to work, reunite with family and comply with supervision can find themselves stuck before they even begin simply because they cannot complete basic steps that require identification.”

Election Reform

What to know: More and more states are enacting election reforms themselves—not waiting for Congress and the SAVE America Act.

The TPPF take: Red states are not waiting for Congress.

“Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed a state-level measure requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote and directing officials to verify applicants using existing data systems,” says TPPF’s Josh Findlay. “The approach mirrors what the SAVE America Act would do at the federal level. DeSantis said the law would “strengthen the security, transparency, and reliability of Florida’s election system. And Florida is not alone.”
