Rebuilding in the Hill Country

What to know: Volunteers remain committed to rebuilding areas in the Texas Hill Country that were devastated by deadly flooding in July.

The TPPF take: When official response was delayed by red tape, volunteers stepped up.

“This wasn’t just a natural disaster,” says TPPF’s Ammon Blair. “It was a cascading failure of systems, leadership, and responsibility. Restructuring the Texas State Guard could help prevent future failures.”

Not Reading the Room

What to know: The American Bar Association has passed a fresh new diversity resolution, claiming, “The ABA believes in excellence. And excellence demands diversity.”

The TPPF take: The ABA exercises too much control over the legal profession.

“The ABA imposes extensive regulations on everything from diversity education to faculty hiring and library resources, which all increase operational costs for law schools, which are then passed on to students,” says TPPF law clerk Noah Pederson. “With all the ABA regulations, it is no wonder that the average law school tuition has skyrocketed, with many students graduating with debt equivalent to a home mortgage.”

No More Subsidies

What to know: President Donald Trump’s One Big, Beautiful Bill eliminates a key subsidy for electric vehicles, starting Oct. 1.

The TPPF take: Electric vehicles will now have to compete with conventional cars and trucks on a level playing field.

“Without artificial support masking market realities, EV manufacturers will need to solve real problems: reducing battery costs, improving charging infrastructure, and addressing environmental concerns about lithium mining (including the massive amounts of water required for it) and battery recycling,” says TPPF’s Cullen Neely. “This is excellent news for American car buyers who will finally have genuine choice, and for taxpayers who will no longer subsidize the vehicle preferences of wealthy early adopters.”
