Red Diaper Tourism

What to know: “Birthright tourism,” or traveling to the U.S. to have a baby, so that the baby can gain automatic U.S. citizenship, is big business, particularly in California.

The TPPF take: “Birthright citizenship” is a misuse of the 14th Amendment.

“The practice of birth tourism and the deliberate crossing of borders by pregnant women to secure U.S. citizenship for their children calls for legislative clarity through statute, something allowed under the Fourteenth Amendment’s language,” says TPPF’s Noah Torres. “Such practices impose significant burdens on taxpayers, who fund health care, education, and other services for individuals who may not reside in or fully contribute to the U.S. economy — or even see themselves as owing allegiance to a foreign power.”

Moving Out

What to know: The mass exodus from blue states to red states is accelerating.

The TPPF take: People simply can’t afford to live in many blue states anymore.

“New York and New Jersey lost $140 billion in income over the last decade because nobody wants to live there anymore,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester. “Over 2 million people have taken their money and moved to other states—mostly Texas and Florida. We’ve heard all the reasons before—property and income taxes are off the charts, housing prices are astronomical and then there’s crime. Those old blue states are no fun anymore. I was just in New York recently, and everybody is depressed.”

Going to the Chapel

What to know: The left has marriage problem, USA Today reports; it may be because so many women on the left see marriage as either optional, or a problem.

The TPPF take: Marriage is a quantifiable good for society.

“For adults, marriage is linked to significantly higher levels of overall well-being,” says TPPF’s Hannah Bruck. “One study says 61% of married adults ages 25 to 50 report they are thriving, compared to 45% of never-married adults, a gap that has persisted across more than a decade of data. Longitudinal research further shows that married individuals experience lower levels of depression and loneliness, and higher levels of meaning and purpose in life, even after accounting for income, education, and prior happiness.”
