Rigging Drug Prices

What to know: Health care is getting more and more expensive, and Texas lawmakers want to know why.

The TPPF take: Drug prices are one of the main culprits in rising drug prices.

“Most people believe high prices are simply the result of expensive research and development, which may hold for some cutting-edge therapies,” says TPPF’s Brian Phillips. “But it’s also the case that pharmaceutical companies, insurance industry, and their middlemen, often exploit complex regulations to jack up the cost of their products. In a competitive market, lower-cost alternatives would put downward pressure on pricing.”

Hitting the Books

The TPPF take: Cell phones are a harmful distraction for students.

“The research on personal device use demonstrates a significant impact on student performance and educational outcomes,” says TPPF’s David Dunmoyer. “Beyond academic performance, personal devices contribute to cyberbullying, social anxiety, sleep deprivation, and other harms.”

Gerrymandering

What to know: The Department of Justice says it will enforce a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling against racially gerrymandered congressional districts.

The TPPF take: The Supreme Court was right to strike down districts drawn along racial lines.

“Majority-minority districts have not increased minority participation in politics,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester. “Instead, they have created political ghettos that segregate Black and Hispanic candidates and voters, stifling their voices instead of expanding them into the larger political conversation.”
