The Real Problem

What to know: At a recent public hearing, a Dallas city council member openly admitted to asking the city’s taxpayer-funded lobbyist “to lobby state senators in West Texas because of property she owns there.” This admission raises serious ethical concerns, to say the least.

The TPPF take: This council member’s shocking confession is another reason to oppose taxpayer-funded lobbying.

“It’s unthinkable that any local elected official would use a taxpayer-funded lobbyist to push for personal gain,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “But that scenario seems to have played out here, based on the council member’s own public statements. This is another good illustration of how dirty this dark practice can be and why the Texas Legislature needs to ban it.”

Our 250th

What to know: As America’s 250th birthday approaches, many of us are thinking about what it means to be an American.

The TPPF take: Let’s teach our kids why America is worth fighting for.

“In a time when leftist agitators unleash waves of violence — from campus riots to street-level chaos — this isn’t just about dusty textbooks,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “It’s about arming the next generation with the knowledge to engage in the civil discourse our republic demands, turning down the temperature on a nation fraying at the edges.”

The Insurance Lobby

What to know: Insurance companies, which were given superpowers by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), are now lobbying for $1 trillion more in federal spending to prop up ACA subsidies.

The TPPF take: What happened to the “affordable” part of the Affordable Care Act?

“The Affordable Care Act has been an American Dream-killer,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “Purchasing options are severely restricted, and the one-size-fits-all nature of the exchange policies just won’t work for too many families. What makes it worse is that the government knows how flawed Obamacare is; yet instead of fixing it they are resorting to limiting more affordable private plans in a naïve attempt to get more healthy Americans to buy into Obamacare plans.”
