School Choice in the Lone Star State

What to know: Families in Texas will soon be able to apply for the Texas Educational Freedom Accounts school choice program.

The TPPF take: School choice is finally coming to Texas.

“Eligible Texas children can receive public funds deposited into a personalized account to be used for approved education expenses,” says TPPF’s Brian Phillips. “These include private school tuition, textbooks, tutoring, specialized therapies, transportation to approved providers, online courses, and career or technical education programs. Applications open February 4, 2026. In the meantime, a broad coalition of activists, parents, and organizations are helping to spread the word so that parents can start getting ready to apply now.”

Agenda for Action

What to know: Public schools across Texas are closing because of declining enrollment and dissatisfied customers—Texas parents.

The TPPF take: TPPF has announced its comprehensive education policy agenda for K-12 education.

“The policy agenda for TPPF’s Next Generation Texas campaign advances policies that put parents first, ensure taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly, and refocus schools and universities on delivering real results for students,” says TPPF’s Kate Bierly.

Woke Sports

What to know: Identity politics has ruined sports, according to Clay Travis.

The TPPF take: Identity politics is also creeping into sports at Texas public schools, where “Islamic Games” have been scheduled.

“We don’t have Presbyterian Games, Baptist Games, or Jewish Games set aside for athletic programs for children of those faiths,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester. “We also don’t set aside athletic platforms for racial or ethnic groups. The people of Texas, speaking through the Texas Legislature, have made it clear they don’t want our education programs divided by identity—race, gender, ethnicity or religion.”
