Smaller Government
What to know: The Washington Post reveals that the Trump administration is intent on reducing the size and scope of government.
The TPPF take: That’s exactly what the American people voted for.
“This week, Trump won at the Supreme Court again when the high court ruled he could fire 1,300 employees at the Department of Education,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester. “The Department of Education was created by former President Jimmy Carter as a favor to the National Education Association, so it’s hard to figure how anyone thought that another president wouldn’t be able to fire employees or even shut it down.”

Crime is Crime
What to know: Ten suspects have been charged in the July 4 attack on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Alvarado, Texas, and shooting a local police officer in the process.
The TPPF take: Democrats want a return to the worst of 1960s radicalism and violence.
“But what is the endgame?” asks TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Do the perpetrators really think that violence directed against law enforcement will cause a cessation of enforcement of the law? Do the left-wing agitators believe that their rage against the machine will result in electoral victory? History suggests their actions will lead inexorably to a law-and-order landslide in 2028.”

Using Your Money Against You
What to know: Local governments are lobbying State government for more government—and it’s all funded by your property taxes. Now, many lawmakers are calling for a ban on taxpayer-funded lobbying.
The TPPF take: Your tax dollars are supposed to pay for police and pothole repair, not high-priced Austin lobbyists.
“Texas’ local governments spent as much as $98.6 million in 2023 to lobby the Legislature for higher taxes, more spending, and greater regulatory control. And that massive lobbying expense doesn’t even include what local governments spent on intergovernmental relations staff, aka in-house lobbyists, and dues paid to pro-government associations, like the Texas Municipal League and the Texas Association of School Boards,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “Cities, counties, school districts, and special districts have weaponized our tax dollars against the taxpayer.”
