South of the Border

What to know: A new law in Mexico amounts to a massive power grab by the ruling party, MORENA. Americas Quarterly calls it “democratic backsliding.”

The TPPF take: It gets worse. Mexico’s governing party is building a permanent partisan organization in the United States while actively using Mexico’s 53 U.S. consulates for party work.

“Every country has the right to serve its citizens abroad, but no foreign ruling party has the right to turn its diplomatic posts into field offices,” says TPPF’s Alejandrina Elms. “Americans deserve to know who is organizing in their communities and on whose behalf. The United States should enforce the Foreign Agents Registration Act wherever MORENA-linked activity meets the statute’s requirements.”

Sick of Socialism

What to know: The Democratic Socialists of America, now functioning as a wing of the Democratic Party, are openly pushing for socialized medicine in the U.S.—without explaining how to pay for it, or what Americans would lose.

The TPPF take: The U.S. should fix healthcare costs before the socialists try to do it.

“Healthcare is increasingly the No. 1 issue for voters,” says TPPF’s Dr. Cliff Porter. “There is a stranglehold by both hospital and insurance corporate cartels subsidized by government cronyism, profoundly worsened by Obamacare (the ironically named Affordable Care Act). Voters are now willing to try something else if elected officials won’t act. Politicians promising ‘Medicare-for-All,’ on the other hand, is a promise they cannot keep.”

Worth It

What to know: The Houston Chronicle is aghast that “Spending on state-led Bluebonnet curriculum could top $1 billion.”

The TPPF take: The new curriculum has proven to be a benefit for Texas students — despite the critics.

“Since the incredible new Bluebonnet Curriculum has been given the green light, there have been dozens of stories that Texas public schools do not teach about slavery and that they force students to embrace Christianity,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester. “Neither is true.”
