Moms Look Out for Us

What to know: Eco-anxiety is hurting our kids.

The TPPF take: Good moms can counter eco-anxiety with facts and hope.

“Saddling our next generation of leaders with the burden of fatalistic pessimism is wrong for so many reasons, especially when even a cursory review of the history of the human condition shows there’s cause not just for pressing onward, but for outright celebration,” says TPPF’s Katie Tahuahua. “Armed with the real facts about the world, my family will go boldly with optimism and confidence into society and strive to leave it a better — not scarier — place.”

Protest, Protest, Protest

What to know: The deadline to file a property tax protest is mid-May in most places. Every property owner should protest their taxes. One new study even suggests handling it yourself, at least if you’re a homeowner. Whether you go it alone or have someone represent you, be sure to file a notice of protest soon!

The TPPF take: Every Texan should protest their property appraisals this year, especially in light of COVID.

“Protest your values, Texas! Every taxpayer should engage in this part of the process now so as to set yourself up for lower tax bills later on,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “Protesting your property appraisal might seem intimidating at first, but there are tons of resources available online, through your appraisal district, and even with third-party companies. Protest today!”

No Jail for Mask-less People

What to know: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Texans faced both criminal penalties and excessive fines for things that may be otherwise everyday activities, like riding a bike or getting your hair cut. Senate Bill 1616 offers a positive step to protecting Texans in the future by removing these criminal penalties.

The TPPF take:

“Failing to wear a face mask or choosing to participate in everyday activities should never lead to criminal penalties and jail time,” says TPPF’s Shelby Sterling. “Local governments abused emergency powers to threaten Texans into forced compliance.”
