Spending is the Problem
What to know: Gov. Greg Abbott is calling on the next Texas Legislature to rein in local government over-spending, which is the driving force behind skyrocketing tax bills. As part of this call, the governor is pushing to “[l]imit local spending to a formula based on population plus inflation or 3.5%, whichever is less.”
The TPPF take: Local government over-spending is the problem. A spending limit is the solution.
“For years, local government spendthrifts have squandered other people’s money on pet projects, progressive activism, and non-essentials. This has resulted in property tax bills going up, up, up endlessly,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “If government spending is taxation, then reckless local government spending is the source of runaway property taxes.”

On the Brink?
What to know: With the Affordable Care Act—also known as Obamacare—“on the brink,” according to National Review, there’s an effort to make Republicans responsible for its failures.
The TPPF take: Republicans shouldn’t take the bait; there are much better alternatives out there for keeping Americans healthy.
“The One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) has opened up opportunities for better medical care at a fraction of the cost,” says TPPF’s Dr. Cliff Porter. “These reforms allow alternatives to traditional higher cost plans for individuals and businesses who were previously forced into high-cost and frustrating Obamacare plans or Medicaid. This is a huge boon for Texans and Americans—more options, less costs, better access.”

Will We Miss It?
What to know: Education Secretary Linda McMahon says the government shutdown showed just how little the Department of Education will be missed.
The TPPF take: Good riddance to the Department of Education.
“The Department of Education was created by former President Jimmy Carter as a favor to the National Education Association, so it’s hard to figure out how anyone thought that another president wouldn’t be able to fire employees or even shut it down,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester.
