That’s Illegal

What to know: The Texas Attorney General’s Office has filed suit against a number of public school officials for illegal electioneering—using public resources to urge their employees to vote against candidates who support school choice.

The TPPF take: Despite illegal electioneering, Texas voters showed in March that they’re demanding school choice.

“While voters still mostly prioritize border security, public safety, and the economy/inflation, school choice became a defining issue of contrast in many contests—especially in the ones where challengers won or pushed incumbents into runoffs,” says TPPF’s Brian Phillips. “With everything going on—pandemic-related school closures, racial and gender indoctrination, inappropriate materials in libraries—perhaps it is an idea whose time has come in Texas.”

Help on the Horizon

What to know: Lt. Governor Dan Patrick recently released 2024 interim charges to the Texas Senate, which asked Members to study a host of different good government ideas, including “continued property tax relief.”

The TPPF take: Further tax relief will help Texans cope with today’s twin crises—Bidenomics and inflation.

“It is prudent for policymakers to study how continued tax relief might strengthen family finances. The next Texas Legislature will have ample resources to put toward this effort too, with almost $19 billion in budget surplus expected plus another $20 billion-plus accumulating in the rainy day fund,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “The next six months are critical to mapping out tax relief in 2025, which will hopefully build on last session’s framework and move us closer to eliminating school M&O taxes.”

A View Into China

What to know: In “The Devil and Communist China,” author Steven Mosher shows how the nation is “a ticking time bomb.”

The TPPF take: Mosher’s book offers a profound and chilling examination of the CCP’s history and its effect on the world.

“Mosher, leveraging decades of research, presents a meticulously documented account of the CCP’s reign, characterized by mass purges, starvation, and a relentless crush on dissent,” writes TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Mosher draws a direct line from the ideological foundations laid by Karl Marx to the execution of these policies by Mao Zedong and his successors up to today’s paramount leader, Xi Jinping.”
