The ‘Green’ in the Green New Deal

What to know: A new report shows that upgrading California’s electrical grid to be able to handle electric vehicles could cost as much as $20 billion—or more.

The TPPF take: Widespread adoption of EVs will require an unprecedented and staggeringly expensive expansion of local electrical grids.

“This will require a huge increase in the production of electrical transformers, along with more power plants and transmission lines to produce and deliver energy,” says TPPF’s Mark P. Mills. “Consumers and taxpayers will pay for that multibillion-dollar price tag, whether through taxes or higher utility rates.”

Misreading the Room

What to know: San Antonio-based insurer USAA has posted its first loss in nearly a century, and announced it’s laying off more than 200 workers.

The TPPF take: USAA went woke. Do you wonder what comes next?

“USAA got its start in 1922 as a mutual self-insurance company for Army officers,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Unfortunately, as USAA grew larger, some customers complained of a decline in quality as USAA increasingly contracted out key services, such as adjustment claims. USAA also drifted from its military heritage.”

Sanctimonious City

What to know: Self-proclaimed “Sanctuary City” Denver is sending a staffer to El Paso to “lower the expectations” for illegal immigrants hoping to travel there.

The TPPF take: Sanctuary cities are revealing how deep their hypocrisy goes.

“The Left would like to have its cake and eat it, too,” says TPPF’s Selene Rodriguez. “It wants the tide of illegal immigration to continue unabated, but it also doesn’t want to foot the bill. The hard truth is none of the states dealing with the influx of migrants should have to be spending the amount of money we are. These migrants should never have been released into the U.S. in the first place.”
