Time for School Choice

What to know: The Texas Legislature continues to debate empowering parents with school choice.

The TPPF take: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott appeared on TPPF’s The Arena with CEO Greg Sindelar on Wednesday to talk about school choice.

“What this legislation does is to ensure that every parent, regardless of wealth, regardless of income, regardless of zip code, they’re going to have the same opportunity that a wealthy person would have to choose a school that’s right for their particular child,” Abbott said. “This is truly a game changer for the overwhelming majority of Texans.”

Right on Crime

What to know: Brett Tolman, who leads TPPF’s Right on Crime effort, says prosecutors should be able to ask for resentencing when new facts emerge.

The TPPF take: A bill in the Legislature would allow prosecutors to reconsider cases when the original sentence no longer fits the crime.

“It would account for new knowledge, correct disparities and recognize changes in individuals who have served long sentences and shown rehabilitation to become contributing members to their communities,” says Brett. “This tool would responsibly focus on cases and individuals who truly deserve a second look and no longer pose a threat to public safety.”

Eyeing Taiwan

What to know: China is conducting military exercises near Taiwan. It’s practicing hitting key ports and energy infrastructure.

The TPPF take: China’s got three ways to go at Taiwan: a patient choke, a lightning grab, or full chaos.

“America’s edge lies in vigilance, allies, and the will to slug it out if needed,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “China’s gamble? Picking the right play and hoping friction doesn’t lead to ruination.”
