U-Turn

What to know: After being threatened with a loss of funding, the city of Laredo finally voted to “cover up a 5-year-old anti-border wall street mural” that was criticized for pushing politics on public property. The woke message read: DEFUND THE WALL – FUND OUR FUTURE.

The TPPF take: At last, Laredo recognizes that public roads are not for political messages.

“The city of Laredo finally made the right decision to remove this leftist street slogan, but it took too long and it should have never been allowed to begin with. Texans expect their city governments to police the streets, put out fires, and fill potholes, not push politics with public resources,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “We have a lot more work to do to rein in activist cities.”

See You In Court

What to know: TPPF attorneys are suing the city of Dallas under the “Death Star” bill, which limits how much cities can regulate the lives of residents and businesses.

The TPPF take: The “Death Star” law, despite its name, only says that cities and counties “must rein in their regulations on Texas business that do not conform with state law.”

“TPPF sued the city of Dallas on behalf of several plaintiffs, charging that 83 local ordinances on a wide range of issues, ranging from minimum wage and labor regulations for city contractors to recycling guidelines to restrictions on drilling and producing oil and gas, did not comply with state law,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester. “These are the kind of job-killing regulations that have stifled growth and bankrupted coastal blue cities like San Francisco and New York for decades.”

Human Trafficking

What to know: A statewide operation dubbed Operation Lightning Bug has rescued more than 30 missing children and disrupted trafficking networks.

The TPPF take: Texas is setting the standard in the fight against human trafficking.

“Texans have shown what leadership looks like in the fight against human trafficking,” says TPPF’s Nikki Pressley. “Now it is time for Washington to follow Texas’ lead and give survivors the freedom and support they deserve. Rescue is just the first chapter; the hard work of recovery, rehabilitation and rebuilding lives must follow.”
