Voter ID

What to know: The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans has upheld voter ID laws in Texas.

The TPPF take: Voter ID laws are just common sense.

“Democrats had insisted that requiring voters to provide identification violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but the court didn’t buy it,” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester. “Neither do most Texans, including Democrats, who support being required to provide an ID before you can vote by a margin of 3 to 1.”

Cell Phones in Schools

What to know: Writing in USA Today, Nichole Russell says banning cell phones in schools is a good thing.

The TPPF take: The widespread use of personal devices—including smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, laptops, and gaming devices—has become a significant challenge in schools.

“While technology plays an essential role in education, personal devices often serve as a distraction rather than a learning tool,” says TPPF’s David Dunmoyer. “Studies indicate that students check their phones more than 100 times per day on average, reducing their ability to focus on classroom instruction.”

Border Wars

What to know: President Donald Trump has sent the U.S. military to the southern border, among other places, Time magazine reports.

The TPPF take: Sending the military to our southern border, and potentially beyond, is a much-needed step for national security.

“Evidence shows that corrupt Mexican military and law enforcement officials are aiding the cartels on U.S. soil,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Securing the border is about more than stemming illegal entrance into America — it also encompasses interdicting deadly drugs and preventing or catching criminals, terrorists and hostile agents from entering, as well.”
