We Remember: On this day in 1836, Texians were victorious at the Battle of San Jacinto, which won independence for Texas.

We Can Fix This Crisis

What to know: Most Republican voters say they lack confidence in the election system.

The TPPF take: U.S. Sen. Rand Paul joined TPPF’s Kevin Roberts for a livestream event on Monday to discuss how to address this crisis.

“There’s a crisis of confidence in our election systems,” says Kevin. “Sen. Rand Paul was kind enough to talk with us about vulnerabilities in our election system and the role of the states in ensuring free and fair elections.”

Political Move

What to know: Texas is blasting the Biden administration for rescinding a Medicaid waiver, in a move it seems is designed to force Texas to expand Medicaid.

The TPPF take: The Biden administration is blocking access to health care for many Texans.

“States see dramatic increases in spending whenever Medicaid is expanded,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “This problem is even worse now because there is a federal prohibition against removing any enrollees from the program — in place until the COVID-19 emergency expires. States are handcuffed indefinitely. Texas can’t ignore these outcomes.”

Property Tax Reform

What to know: Texas continues to have one of the worst property tax burdens in the nation.

The TPPF take: We can give property owners real tax relief.

“Authored by Rep. Andrew Murr, R-Junction, House Bill 59 would eliminate the school maintenance and operations portion of your property tax bill on Jan. 1, 2024, and would create a legislative commission that would use the intervening time to study the best way to replace that revenue,” says TPPF’s Vance Ginn. “This bill would cut local property taxes nearly in half while adhering to the state’s constitutional responsibility of funding government schools.”
