We Remember ItCorrectly

What to know: A new book attempting to debunk “myths” about the Alamo—and the Texas revolution itself—continues to get national attention.

The TPPF take: Like the New York Times’s debunked 1619 Project, the book is an effort to diminish the great figures of history and place slavery at the center of every story.

“Yet this is what revisionist history does—makes heroes of the villains and villains of the heroes,” says TPPF’s Tom Lindsay. “Yet Texas is the extension of America’s founding, based on the principles of ordered liberty, self-government, and equality. The story of the Texas Revolution is just as relevant in 2021 as it was in 1836.”

What Are We Subsidizing?

What to know: More and more states—including Texas—are ending the COVID-19 unemployment benefits boost.

The TPPF take: That pandemic payout has been subsidizing unemployment, serving as a measurable drag on the economic recovery.

“There are ‘help wanted’ signs everywhere at restaurants, bars, and hotels,” says TPPF’s E.J. Antoni. “Despite offering signing bonuses and other incentives, these businesses simply cannot compete with the federal government’s generous unemployment insurance bonuses and other handouts. These destructive policies have increased unemployment by millions and created what’s been called the great American labor shortage.”

State-Sponsored Racism

What to know: Elites such as the New York Times’ Charles Blow say that parents object to their children being taught Critical Race Theory only because they aren’t smart enough to know what it is.

The TPPF take: Fortunately, Texas lawmakers decided to listen to parents, not New York elites.

“Texas’ ‘Partisanship Out of Civics Act’ (HB 3979) is landmark civil rights legislation that protects Texas students from partisan indoctrination and state-funded racism, such as ‘Critical Race Theory’ and so-called ‘Culturally Responsive Teaching,’” says TPPF’s Lucy Meckler. “Put simply, the bill reaffirms Texas’ dedication to the 1964 Civil Rights Act by prohibiting racist doctrines in public K-12 teaching.”
