What Does ‘Defending Democracy’ Mean?

What to know: President Joe Biden is making “defending democracy” the central point of his campaign.

The TPPF take: Do we really have a “democracy” when the permanent government — the administrative state — views elected officials and their duly appointed staff as a threat to their domain?

“True democracy involves more than just holding elections; it requires that the elected representatives can implement the will of the people without undue interference from unelected officials,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “There is a growing concern that some senior bureaucrats, insulated from public accountability, are thwarting the policies of elected officials, thereby subverting the democratic process.”

Backfired

What to know: The Democrats’ lawfare against former President Donald Trump has backfired, the Wall Street Journal writes.

The TPPF take: Americans are realizing how politicized our justice system has become against the left’s political targets.

“Politics is quickly taking over any fidelity to the Constitution or the rule of law,” says TPPF’s Brett Tolman. “If you’re in opposition to the party in power, the criminal justice system can and likely will be weaponized against you. We must stop placating judicial abuse and corruption or any one of us could be met with brute political and legal warfare by those in power.”

Holding Them Accountable

What to know: Three deans at Columbia University have been ousted for antisemitic text messages. In those messages, they mocked Jewish students who fear for their safety.

The TPPF take: DEI is the acronym for “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” a deceptively named race-based ideology that divides people into two groups—oppressors, who are mostly white people, although increasingly Jews and Asians are included in the oppressor group—and victims, who are African American, Hispanic or gay.

“DEI advocates have been working for more than a decade to re-segregate university campuses in Texas and across the country so ‘victims’ aren’t required to interact with “oppressors” in classes and activities.” says TPPF’s Sherry Sylvester.
