Why So Scared?

What to Know: Harris County will sue the state over an ordered election audit.

The TPPF Take: What is it about an audit that strikes fear into the hearts of Harris County officials?

“Any reasonable official, such as Harris County’s own nonpartisan interim elections administrator Beth Stevens, would view the audit for what it is: an opportunity to prove the naysayers wrong and show the public that their elections are being run responsibly,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “Public trust in our elections is essential for a healthy and thriving democracy.”

Mexican Military

What to Know: Mexico’s president is expanding the military’s role, bringing the National Guard under the Defense Ministry.

The TPPF Take: Mexico’s constitution states the militarized police force shall operate under civilian leadership.

“AMLO, as the president is known, previously said he would send a constitutional reform to Congress, which would assign the National Guard to National Defense Secretariat authority,” says TPPF’s David Agren. “But the prospects for approval in Congress—where AMLO’s MORENA party and its allies lack a supermajority—appear slim. Any decree would be challenged to the Supreme Court.”

Inflation

What to Know: Inflation cooled a little in July, and the Biden administration sees that as a win.

The TPPF Take: Inflation is up at an astonishing 8.5% over the last year.

“Don’t let the White House try to spin this as ‘good’ news when inflation remains at the highest levels in 40 years,” says TPPF’s Vance Ginn. “And it’s the direct result of overspending, excessive regulation and overprinting of money. The new ‘Inflation Reduction Act’ will make it worse.”
