Blowing Up the Budget

What to know: The U.S. Senate could take up the “reconciliation bill”—a massive spending spree—as soon as today.

The TPPF take: This big-spending bill should be rejected outright.

“President Biden and Congressional Democrats have proposed roughly $6 trillion in new spending over a decade of hard-earned taxpayer dollars,” says TPPF’s Vance Ginn. “To put it bluntly, this reckless spending will destroy America’s fiscal and economic institutions by pushing us toward insolvency, dependency, and insanity.”

Is That So?

What to know: A commentator in The Hill says that last week’s strong jobs report offers “vindication” of President Joe Biden’s policies.

The TPPF take: Not so fast.

“The market is still 5.7 million jobs below its pre-pandemic level and there are growing headwinds—in the form of unwise government policies—that will likely mitigate future growth rates,” says TPPF’s E.J. Antoni. “Inflation poses a significant risk to the labor market and economy at large.”

Bring Back the Ban

What to Know: Texans throughout the state are renewing calls for a ban on taxpayer-funded lobbying.

The TPPF take: Gov. Abbott should add that ban to the special session agenda.

“Local governments spend your tax money to hire contract lobbyists who advocate for pro-government positions,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “These hired guns almost always argue for higher taxes, more spending, and bigger government. For Texans who find themselves opposite these publicly-funded advocates, they can find themselves at a great disadvantage.”
